How to get Builders Licence in NSW
The NSW Department of Fair Trading oversees and regulates building licenses in New South Wales (NSW). This authority mandates and monitors licenses for both builders and contractors operating in the region. To be eligible for consideration, all applicants must meet a series of prerequisites outlined by the department. It’s crucial to review these requirements regularly, as they may undergo frequent updates.
To qualify for an NSW building license, whether for general or residential building work, candidates must demonstrate a minimum of two years of recent and relevant industry experience. Additionally, applicants must possess at least one of the specified credentials and fulfil the fundamental prerequisites listed below.

Additonal requirements to be mindful of
In addition to holding a certificate in one of the mentioned certifications and accruing a minimum of two years of building experience, there’s an essential additional qualification required.
- Current Carpentry or Bricklaying contractor licence or supervisor certificate
- Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) - CPC50220 (current)/ BCG50206/ CPC50208
- Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) CPC50210
- Degree in Building, Construction Management, General Construction, Construction Economics, Quantity Surveying, or Applied Science (Building) from an Australian University (4-year full-time degree program) with mandatory work placement.
